Overview

Deep-bed filters operate by accumulating the filtered particulate mass within their body rather than on their surface which is the case for most honeycomb wall-flow (surface) filters. Deep-bed filters can be based on ceramic or metal foams or fibers.

axifoam is a comprehensive deep-bed filter model, accounting for the following phenomena:

  • flow distribution in the filter body
  • detailed particulate filtration characteristics
  • transient heat transfer
  • catalytic reactions on the surface in the case of catalyst coated systems
  • mass-transfer coupled with surface reactions
  • soot reactions with O2 and NO2

The reaction scheme and rate expressions are identical to those used in axicat and axitrap and thus cover all possible catalytic applications, incl. DOC, LNT, SCR etc.

The typical designs used in automotive applications are either “axial” or “radial” flow. Both these design concepts can be handled in 2-dimensions by axifoam, by solving the respective mass, momentum, energy and species balances.
